Nakshatra

What is Nakshatra as per Vedic Astrology?

Moon takes around 27 days to transit through the zodiacal belt of 360 degrees. This is a well known astrological fact that has a basis in the science of astronomy. Each night, Moon roughly travels 13 degrees and 20 minutes into the sky, changing its spot daily. After 27 days it comes back to its original position. This is the basis of 27 Nakshatras or constellations in the sky.

Our Vedas, especially Rig Veda mentions the term Nakshatra. But not all 27 find mention in Rig Veda. In Yajur Veda, all 27 nakshatras have been mentioned. In the western and european counterpart of astrology, 28 constellations were mentioned in the older times. The 28th nakshatra is actually a part of the nakshtra that is included in the list of the 27 constellations. It was argued that it was the constellations that were observed first. There was a need to divide the sky further into signs and that's how the 12 signs of zodiac came into existence. The 27 nakshatras are the heavenly bodies that are visible to human and can be observed, unlike the 12 sign from aries to pisces.

Since Nakshatras play a very important role in the precitive astrology, the traits of individuals born with Moon in the 27 different nakshatras have been described in the subsequent pages.
